Would-be burglars 'strike' bowling alley

RED HOOK - Dutchess County Sheriff's deputies have increased patrols in the county as burglaries have risen in northern Dutchess. Luckily, one of those patrols was near Ro-Lin Lanes on Route 9G in Red Hook on Jan. 4 when officers were able to apprehend two individuals attempting to burglarize the bowling alley.

According to the Sheriff's Office, a police patrol was dispatched to the bowling alley at 11:40 p.m. after the office received word that the alarm system had been set off.

As deputies arrived on the scene two, subjects, 37-year-old Scott Hapeman of Kingston and 35-year-old Bradley Hapeman of Saugerties, were found in the front of the building attempting to gain access.

Scott was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit through a wooded area behind the building. Bradley was apprehended more than three hours later and a mile away in the wooded area off River Road in Red Hook. His arrest was made after he was lured to a vehicle in a Sheriff's Office sting.

Bradley had contacted a friend from Saugerties to pick him up, but the car was intercepted by patrol units, at which point Deputy Stephen Slattery rode with the friend to pick up Bradley.

Upon further inspection of the scene, deputies found the alert came to their office after the two men had disconnected a phone line to the building in an attempt to disable the alarm, police said.

According to Det. Gerard Pfitcher, recent burglaries in the county have led to increased patrols to combat the activity. He said when the alert came, a patrol was not far from the scene, allowing the officers to apprehend both men before they could gain entry.

He said thanks to the patrol saturation and attentive officers "nothing was taken."

"It was good police work on the deputies' parts," said Pfitcher.

Both men have been charged with Attempted Burglary in the 3rd degree, a felony, possession of burglar's tools, and have been remanded to Dutchess County Jail without bail and are awaiting a trial.

According to Pfitcher, the attempted burglary was one of several that evening in northern Dutchess. The Sheriff's Office is investigating the multiple burglaries, which may be related.

"The deputies are not overlooking anything," said Pfitcher.
