The Rhinebeck senior class will hold its commencement Friday evening at Rhinebeck High School. The valedictorian is Rachel Baker, daughter of James and Ellen Baker of Clinton Corners. Rachel is a member of the National Honor Society, the Rhinebeck Interact Club, the Latin Club, the Yearbook Club, Youth Against Racism, and the school musical. Rachel was also a member of the Varsity Field Hockey team.

She is a National Merit Scholarship Program Commended student, winner of the PTSO Latin Award and the Helen Delaporte Memorial Award. In April, she was selected as a winner in the IBM Thomas J. Watson Memorial Scholarship Program. Rachel will attend Union College in the fall, the alma mater of both her parents, where she plans a science major.

Rachel attended Dutchess Day School in Millbrook for kindergarten through 8th grade, and felt it set the tone for her strong academic career. Her favorite high school teacher was Maureen Cunningham, as she was "easy to talk to and a really good teacher," Rachel said. "She included fun topics in children's and multicultural literature in the curriculum."

Physics was her most challenging subject, and Rachel found time management a tool she needed and developed it throughout her high school years. "Field hockey takes a lot of time," Rachel said. "But if you manage your time well, it's not a problem."

Rachel is intrigued with the possibility of joining the Peace Corps eventually, as she loves international travel. On an Eco-Teach school trip to Costa Rica, Rachel felt happy to be doing "something international to help the world and its people." She reported that the high school group learned about the "bright, vibrant culture" by living with Costa Rican families with whom they are still in contact.

An accomplished vocalist, the valedictorian will sing "For Good," from the Broadway show "Wicked," during the commencement ceremony.

"Over the past 13 years, we've grown up together," Rachel said, referring to her classmates at Rhinebeck high school. "We still have so much more ahead of us."
